Daily Reflection: 1 December 2023

Today, Catholic Pilgrims, I’m excited to share with you the Saint’s work I’ll be reading for Season Four of my podcast “Journeying With the Saints.”

Very early on last year, I was pretty positive that I would read Thomas a Kempis’ “Imitations of Christ.” For some reason, I had always thought that Thomas a Kempis was a canonized saint, however, I learned he is not. So, I asked all of you if they would be okay with me reading a very important spiritual work even though it was written by someone who wasn’t an official saint.

Every one was so positive and I was pretty excited to jump in, but then…

Several people informed me that over on the Hallow app, Jim Caviezel is reading “Imitations of Christ.” Just to refresh your memory, Jim Caviezel is the guy who played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ.”

So, I thought, this is an interesting twist. The Hallow App is huge and I love it, I use it every day. Jim Caviezel is very popular and since he is already reading what I picked, I started to doubt if I should right now, especially since so many of you are already listening to the readings. I felt I maybe needed to figure out someone else’s work to read.

I shared my dilemma with my oldest daughter and several days after we talked she texted me and said, “What about St. Francis de Sales book, ‘Introduction to the Devout Life?’ It’s super popular right now with young people.”

Funny story, for Season Two, I was toying between two guys–Fulton Sheen and St. Francis de Sales. Venerable Fulton Sheen won out, but I still have the book “Introduction to the Devout Life.” Huh, I thought to myself, “Maybe I need to come back to him and so I have.”

Season Four will be reading “Introduction to the Devout Life” by St. Francis de Sales, a french bishop. I don’t have any details other than that right now, so stay tuned, but I hope you are excited. I’m excited and it feels right.

Have a blessed day, Catholic Pilgrims.
