Daily Reflection: 30 November 2023

There’s something special about the Sea of Galilee. As you walk along it, you can see so many scenes from the Bible play out in your head and the geography of it all starts to make sense.

But, most of us won’t walk along the Sea of Galilee and none of us were called from these waters to be one of the Twelve.

There may be a tendency to think that the calling from Christ by these shores was only for some of the Twelve and the rest of us just get to read about how cool that must of been.

This isn’t true. The sea represents life and we are all living our lives. Like Peter and Andrew, James and John, we are making our way, our living, through this life.

Make no mistake, Christ breaks into each of our lives and says to each of us, “Come after me.”

The four men, in our Gospel reading from Matthew today, go when called. They leave their nets and they go. They don’t wait until they’ve figured everything out. They don’t say, “I’ll come, but just give me a sec.” No, they just go.

Christ calls each of us in our own separate way. He breaks in and says, “Come. Trust me enough to go all in.”

We all have our Sea of Galilee moment, Catholic Pilgrims. Our biggest fear is that following Christ will not measure up to the life that we had planned out. But, if we had the opportunity to ask Peter, Andrew, James, and John if it was worth dropping the nets, they’d think we were crazy for even asking.

Live the Faith boldly and travel well this Thursday.

St. Andrew, pray for us!
