Daily Reflection: 29 January 2024

The land beyond the Sea of Galilee in this picture is the Golan Heights and it’s over in this area that our Gospel reading from Mark takes us today. You are looking eastward.

This passage today about the unclean spirits and the swine is a curious one. The response of the people after seeing the salvation of the tormented man with the unclean spirit is a bit mind boggling.

They’re scared and want Jesus to leave? These people who have had to struggle to keep this madman chained and bound away from civilization are upset now because some swine tumbled into the sea?

You’d think they’d be relieved. You think they’d be laying gifts at Jesus’ feet, but no.

The swine were their livelihood and now 2,000 of them drowned into the sea. “If this is the price of salvation, who the heck wants it?” They were fearful of how else Jesus might disrupt their lives. They’d gotten used to the way things were.

It’s hard for us to sympathize with these pig herdsmen because, after all, these were just pigs. You can get more.

But…

What if Christ came and tossed our phones in the sea? What if He came and tossed our cars and we couldn’t get them back? What if He tossed all the coffee in the world with no hope for more? What if He tossed anything we idolized as the price for our salvation? Would we understand the people now? I think we would.

We all say we want salvation, Catholic Pilgrims, but are we really and truly ready to accept it at the price of losing our idols?

It’s a good question to honestly ask ourselves.

Live the Faith boldly and travel well this Monday.
