Daily Reflection: 12 November 2023

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in 10 years of writing on here is to wait to give my thoughts on a subject.

When I was younger, I was always quick to give my thoughts and opinions on things before I had all the information or even just a little bit of information.

Consequently, I embarrassed myself quite a few times. I hated the way that made me feel and I realized it was no one’s fault but my own. I lacked wisdom and prudence.

Social media makes us think we have to give our thoughts on every single event that happens and…

AND…we are encouraged to give it immediately and say it loudly.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people write me and question my decision to not speak about (fill in with any viral event).

“Why aren’t you speaking out about this?! Do you not care?????”

But, I’ve learned to wait. I don’t want to give a knee-jerk reaction and I want to allow more time for information to come in. I’ve watched too many people through the years, myself included, embarrass themselves by jumping to give their thoughts too soon.

If we value wisdom, we must stand outside of the shouting mob and observe. We must turn to God in prayer. We must learn to hold our tongue at certain times, especially when most everyone else is dashing around trying to be the loudest in the group.

Today, in the reading from the Book of Wisdom 6:12-16, it says:

“For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence.”

I don’t have perfect wisdom, Catholic Pilgrims, nobody here on earth does. We can grow in wisdom, though, and part of growing in it is to practice prudence. We must pause before reacting, take the matter to God in prayer, and be a bit more willing to educate ourselves beyond headlines.

Live the Faith boldly and travel well this Sunday.
