One time when I was a kid, I decided to start a secret club. Without much thought into what exactly its members were going to do, I threw out the news that a secret club was starting in my backyard.
Soon, several kids found their way to my yard wanting to be a part of my secret club. They asked, โWhat are we going to do?โ
โWe are going to investigate things.โ
That caught their attention and it wasnโt long before I had maybe four members.
But, I didnโt really know what we were investigating, so I just kind of made it up as we went. Weโd go over to the park near my house and look for clues. Clues for what? Nobody knew. Just find stuff and bring it back to share with the group.
As you can imagine, my secret club didnโt last long. Since nobody, myself included, could figure out what the purpose of the club was, we all lost interest. Better to just play a game or something.
A woman showed up a few days ago, claiming that we are hemorrhaging members because we are just abandoning people and so nobody wants to come anymore. She didnโt say it outright, but it was implied that she feels we arenโt โinclusive and tolerantโ enough.
That is not why most people leave.
Too many churches, in an effort to be hip and cool with the times, abandon the principles of the Christian Faith. They look just like the rest of the world with their tolerance of sin and lackluster message. They are like my secret clubโno direction or real purpose. They ask so little of you, why bother?
Iโve lived all over the country and Iโve visited more churches than I can count and I can tell you, the churches that passionately live out the Gospel and call people to a higher calling, they are thriving. They are packed and full of kids.
The ones that look more like a Kumbaya gathering, are not. The churches I see that have more banners and flags for social justice warrior stuff, instead of Christ-focused messages, are dying.
Christianity is meant to be different than the rest of the world, Catholic Pilgrims. Deep down we all want to be challenged. Authentic Christianity should challenge us to become saints. If it doesnโt, it will be as ambiguous and uninspiring as my secret club and people will drift away.
Live the Faith boldly and travel well.
