Daily Reflection: 14 September 2023

Within the span of a week, I’ve seen a shocking number of videos of people-mostly women-extolling the joys of living a self-centered life.

I shouldn’t be shocked, but there seems to be a deluge of them recently.

Our culture is centrally focused on the self.

Self-care

Self-affirmation

Self-discovery

Selfish. Oops, did I type that out loud?

Each one of these videos has a similar theme: The self is the only one that matters. The universe revolves around me or at least it should. The goal of your life is ease, pleasure, and making sure that you are number one. If anyone or anything detracts from these goals, dump them. Fill yourself to the brim with more and more of you.

St. Paul reminds us in Philippians 2:6-11 that Christ “emptied Himself” for us.

Emptied Himself through His death on the Cross.

Today is the Feast Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The cross is the greatest symbol of humility, obedience, and sacrificial love there is.

Every time I look at Christ on the cross, I am reminded that my life should not revolve around me, but Him.

We will never find true joy and fulfillment, Catholic Pilgrims, spending all our time focused on ourselves. It is only when we empty ourselves for others and pick up our cross, in imitation of Christ, that we will truly live.

Have a blessed Thursday.
