Daily Reflection: 12 September 2023

Have you ever played the game with your kids where you try to see if another name fits you?

I’ll ask my kids, “Do I look like a Sarah?”

“No, not at all.”

“What about a Becky?”

“No, only Amy fits you.”

My sister and I are named after characters from the book “Little Women.” My music-loving dad liked the names, too, because there is the Kiss song “Beth” and the song “Amie” by Pure Prairie League which came out a several years before I was born.

There is really no other name I could go by. I am an “Amy.” Our name is significantly important and powerful. Saying a person’s name when they aren’t around has the power to conjure up the image of that person in your mind. Calling out a person’s name in a crowd can single them out.

As more and more people are rejecting the biological reality of their bodies, at the same time, they desire to change their name, which is a rejection of self.

What’s also interesting is that those who perform dark deeds always seek to live that persona under a different name—think of p0rn stars and dr@g queens.

Even movie stars change their names to adopt a different persona and I think that move often causes them to lose touch with who they really are. Think of Marylin Monroe.

We don’t give enough credit to the power of our name and how it signifies us as a unique person loved into existence.

Saying the very name of Jesus causes demons to flee, yet it is a balm for souls in distress. His name is perfection.

Today, Catholic Pilgrims, we honor the most holy name of Mary. The woman who bore our Savior deserves our love and devotion. If ever you need prayers or comfort, you can always call

on the name of Mary and she will draw you to her Son.

Have a blessed Tuesday.
