Daily Reflection: 1 Aug 2023

August is already here, Catholic Pilgrims.

When I was younger, my dad always told me that the older you get the faster the trips around the sun become. I didn’t understand him then, but I do now.

Wheat is talked about a lot in the Bible. We’ve been reading from Matthew 13 in the daily readings and the good seed that was sown is wheat.

I can’t eat wheat, but, goodness, I do remember how delicious it tasted. G-free bread just isn’t the same.

Now that August is here, the harvest is not far away. Growing up in Kansas, in August, the fields started looking worn down and ready to be done. The weeds had intermingled and the fields didn’t look as pretty as they did in June. But, the wheat stayed strong and just kept growing despite heat, the scorching rays, the infiltrating weeds, and pests.

The farmers were always able to gather the good wheat because it held its own among hardships.

We obviously know that the wheat—the good seeds—in the parable are “the children of the Kingdom.”

We are going to “grow up” with lots of bad things all around us, things that will try to choke us out. But, we know that the good seed still prevails. We, as Christians, can prevail despite all that comes with living in a fallen world.

If we stay close to Christ and follow His Will, it is possible. Like plants in August, we may get tired and exhausted by trying to hold on to goodness, but Christ will sustain us by the wheat that becomes His Body. That’s where our strength comes from.

Have a blessed August, Catholic Pilgrims.
