Daily Reflection: 12 July 2023

Almost one year ago, I did Fiat90 with a group of ladies. It’s a 90-day, intense focus on your relationship with God. It’s the women’s equivalent to the guys’ Exodus90.

One of the things you have to do is incorporate going to daily Mass once a week. So, my kids and I started attending daily Mass at noon on Fridays in Old Town Alexandria at St. Mary’s, the oldest Catholic Church in Virginia.

It really became something I looked forward to and it became a part of our lives. We knew on Fridays that we would be going to Mass.

As with any move, you have to adjust and work out the kinks, so I was unsure if we would be able to continue our tradition of going on Friday.

In our new spot in Alabama, we are very close to a Catholic Church but the daily Mass is at 8:15 in the morning. Not an ideal time for me.

But, this past weekend, my son said to me, “Are we going to go to daily Mass on Fridays still?”

I responded back, “Well, I’m not sure yet.”

He said back, “We need to go because it’s like a thing we do now.”

I said to him, “Well, it’s early in the morning and you like to sleep in. You would be okay with getting up early and going?”

“Yeah, I haven’t been sleeping in as late anymore anyway.”

This surprised me, as he is my sleepyhead kid.

Internally, though, it was me that was making excuses.

Then, as I was praying, I remembered the meaning of my son’s name, Jeremiah—God will make him great.

I thought to myself, “Here is my young son asking to go to daily Mass and being willing to forgo sleep and, yet, I’m making excuses? Good grief.”

So, I changed my mindset. I asked him if he would be willing to go with me everyday to Mass and he said he would.

So, this week we started going to daily Mass and he’s the youngest person there, but, it’s because of him that we are there.

Sometimes, God blesses you in the most unexpected and extraordinary ways, Catholic Pilgrims.

Have a blessed Wednesday.
