Daily Reflection: 20 June 2023

I love how the light streamed down on this woman as she prayed. It’s like a visual image of the graces she received.

I recently heard a sad story over lunch with friends. The guy at our table was telling us that the year he converted to Catholicism, another guy had been in his RCIA class and came into the Church at the same time.

“He used to be so on fire for his faith, but, sadly, he doesn’t come to Mass anymore.”

Those of listening asked why.

“Well, he became obsessed with politics and he couldn’t stand Nancy Pelosi, so much so, that he became consumed with hate for her. He hated that she claimed to be Catholic and caused so much scandal.

I told him, ‘Man, you’re gonna have to let that go. Pray for her. We should want her to get better, not stay stuck in mortal sin.’ But, it seems he couldn’t do that and so, he’s fallen away from his faith. I need to see if I can get him to come back.”

My husband’s best friend said in response, “He let Nancy Pelosi win, and by extension, the devil, by taking him away from Christ.”

This is why our Lord said, “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44

I’ve struggled immensely with how hard it is to love someone that is doing evil things or has done them. The hate I’ve had for others consumed me and made me a bitter, unpleasant person to be around.

The irony is: You hate someone for what they are doing and because they are bad, but that hate doesn’t make you a good person. In fact, it can sink you and make you a burden on others.

Love should move us to hate sin and to try to rescue people from it, not hope that they stay in their sinful ways so that they “get theirs.”

Catholic Pilgrims, we should want people to change for the good. Hating someone never converted anybody; loving them has and then, they change, and they stop doing bad things for the most part and isn’t that what we should want? Of course, it is.

I’ve been praying now for two specific people in my life that I used to hate. I want them to find Christ and I want them to know love. Not only have these prayers hopefully helped them, they’ve helped my heart to be less calloused.

Have a blessed Tuesday.
